Week in Review for 11/03/10

Math

This week in Maths we have been learning about mode, mean, median and range. Mode is the most often occurring number in the set of numbers you have. Mean is when you have to add all the numbers together and then divide it by the number of numbers given. Median is when you put all the numbers in order and find the one in the middle, but if they are an even set of numbers then you also have to put them in order but this time take the two numbers in the middle and add them together and then divide it by two because they are only two numbers, and that should give you the answer. Range is when you get the biggest and smallest number in your set of numbers and subtract the smallest from the largest and that would give you the range.

English

This week in English we had to pick a topic to do, after we had done that we had to do a KWL chart where we write all that we know and all that we want to know, next we had to research and find all the information that we needed, after we had finished our research we had to write our first draft which had to be 3 pages and size 12 and the font had to be Times New Roman and finally the title and the sub-heading could be size 18, but overall I liked it!

Inquiry

In Inquiry this week we have been creating catapult's which was a method of execution in the old days. We had to go in pairs. We got 3 objects which were: 10 pieces of Lego, a spoon and a cotton ball. Out of these three things we had to create our own catapult. We built the catapult with Lego then we put the spoon between the Lego and last we put the cotton ball on the spoon and we then had to drag the spoon downwards, towards the table to get a lot of power, next we had to release the spoon which would make the cotton ball fly in the air, like they did in the old days except they would put person instead of the cotton ball.

It was a fun week!

Thanks B!

A Mathematics poem!

Math poem

Math is great,

For thinking and no debate,

To open my mind and think,

I have to answer without a blink,

Math is great,

It takes my time until eight,

Not like writing, finishing my ink,

It takes my mind, like swimming till you sink,

Math is great,

To do it with your best mate,

To finish it quickly,

But take care, the teacher marks it strictly,

Math is great,

To help you with your career state,

Its an interesting subject to study,

As it turns out to be a hobby.

Thanks B!

Catapult challenge winners

This week in Inquiry the class has started investigating forces and Newton’s Laws of Motion.

We had a contest to see which group could build a working catapult with a given set of materials in a very limited amount of time from design to testing to working model. Everyone had lots of fun and stray cotton balls were frequently seen flying through the air – having deviated from their intended course!

Great fun! Here are the winners:

First place: S & A with a distance of 3m

Second place: G, K, & P with a distance of 2m 65cm

Third place: S, D & M with a distance of 2m

We’ll be taking what we’ve learned into the coming week as we continue our investigations.

Take Care!

Mr. L

Week in Review for 03/0310

What we have been taking in Maths this week:

This week, we have been looking at Mode, Mean, Median and Range which are different kinds of average.

Mode is the most often number, if you look at the mode you will find that M and O stands for most and often.

Mean is really mean, because you have to add up all the numbers and then divide it by the number of numbers. For example you have 1, 2, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 10, 11; you add them up then divide them by 9 because there are 9 numbers. This is how average is usually worked out.

Median is the middle number, if you have an odd number of numbers it is only the middle after they are put in order. For example 1, 2, 3,3, 6, the three here is the median because there are five numbers. Median is not just the middle, if you have an even number, the two middle numbers added up to make the total, then it is divided by two then you get your answer.

On the other hand Range is simple because if you have 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 10, the range will be 9. As 10 is the biggest number and 1 is the smallest number thus 10-1 equals 9.

We have been also using Mathletics. In Mathletics you get to play games like Tutpup. If you get high score you earn credits, credits are like money where you can buy stuff. You ca. also earn weekly points if you are the winner of the week. Congratulations to Isaac H from America, he is the winner of this week.

I think we should continue using Mathletics and any other websites to do with Maths. This makes us more challenged and gives us an urge to learn Maths and be better.

Thanks A!

Week in Review for 11/02/10

Environmental Sciences Centre (ESC) TRIP:

2 weeks ago we went on a trip to a nearby environmental science centre. We all had groups and we did different things to the other groups. My group did acting fishing we also made food webs and we drew pictures about consumers and producers. We had luch there in very open rooms with funny doors and also there wasnt any windows there was just fly screen.

I had a great time there and i hope to go back there again.

MATHS:

Next week we have our Maths Week I hope it will be fun! This week my friends and i made a maths game it is 3-D snakes and ladders/monoply it is really fun.
Inquiry and english: this week we had our celebration of learning and we all got to show our parents our diaramas and our information , we also did our persuasive speeches for judging by Miss Phelps she is one of the secondary english teachers.

Week in Review 18/02/10

This week was maths week at school we each made projects for judging I was a risk-taker making my publicity motif i designed it to look like a calculator and the buttons displayed what technology uses maths to work, This worked tied into one of my new personal goals to think outside of the box and use other things i have never worked with before.

English: We have started using laptops for work learning to use them made me an inquirer i was trying to find new things to use on the computer and how different things worked. In this work I was also thinking outside of the box.

Inquiry: We have just had our celebration of learning we showed our parents all the work we have done in this unit my group made a stop-press movie and a replica of a zoo enclosure for Asian Elephants , when show different parents my work I was caring and reflective by being caring I let people talk about my work without interupting and by be reflective I let people know how much trouble our group went to, to get all of it done on time. One of my goals that I used in this is interacting with others because I worked with other people not just my friends.

Week in Review for 04/02/10

This week in year 6 we had lots of fun, we had our videos in Inquiry, we read out our persuasive writing texts and lots more things that I will explain now!

INQUIRY:

In inquiry we practiced our scripts, did the last few touches to our diaramas and then we made the videos, my group's animal is the Asian Elephant and it is much endangered! Also, the other year 6 class came to see our work because they didn't really know what to do in this project but it's normal because the project is quite difficult. We are also still working on our research papers and presentations.

ENGLISH:

In English we had to listen to a partner read their persuasive writing texts and tell them where to put more expression in what they say because some people didn't put much expression and it made what they were reading quite boring. Then, we rehearsed with our group. After that the teacher gave us a post-it note with a letter on it and he would call out a person and say "this person is letter A, B, C…" and the person with the post-it note and that letter had to mark the person reading their persuasive writing text and at the end when everyone had read their persuasive writing text we could go to break.

MATHS:

In maths we have been working on parallel sides and shapes with lines of symmetry which was quite fun because we got to use the mirrors and colour in the shapes! We also worked on reflecting shapes in the four quadrants and naming more difficult 2D shapes. We also got to do our maths games which was also lots of fun because the different groups had different ideas and they were all really cool!

Thanks P!

Week in Review for 28/01/10

In maths we have been looking at formula. For example, p x 3 = 45. The formula is p = 15 because     15 x 3 = 45.

In English we are studying persuasive righting. We are using tools like propaganda and rhetorical questions to advertise a holiday on the moon.

In inquiry we are learning about biodiversity and how all living things depend on all other living things. On Thursday we went to an enviormental scince centre where we were put into groups and did 4 different activaties. In one of them we put snails in a jar on their own, plants in a jar on their own and snails and plants in the same jar. All the things died in all of the jars except for the balanced jar. The second activity was when we took sea weed and put it test tubes and left it there for 20 minutes. When we came back, we could see it made oxygen because there where bubbles in the test tubes. In the next activity we made a play showing the interdependence of all living things. The last activite was when we made a food chain. A food chain is a line of animals that eat other animals, for example a lion eats a zebra that eats grass.

Week in Review for 21/01/10

Math

This week in math we where descusing formula and word problems. In formula today we did some simple algerbra. At the beginning I thought it would be hard, but in the end it wasn't as hard as I expected and I managed to do it well. It was questions like 8n+2=66.

English

This week in english we are doing a webquest. A webquest is a task. For our webquest this week we got into teams and then investigated about persuasive writing. After that we had to write one in our groups. You could write about anything that had persuasive writing in it like: Advertisments, arguments and so on.

Inquiry
This week in inquiry we first got into groups and then each person in a group had to get a job that the group leader would decide on. After that, as a team, we had to come up with an endangerd species and research about that species. When we had finished researching we created a enviroment for that species in a box. After that we have to write a report, create a presentation and a movie.

Thanks S!

Week in Review for 14.01.10

This week was the second week of school, in English we started doing persuasive writing about a subject that really meant a lot to us, my partner and I, have decided to take the position that “Wildlife Killing is Wrong.”
Before starting to write them we read a really good piece of work written by a girl in the same grade as us but not in our school, she even won a prize!

In Maths we are revising a bit from before the holidays and also working with decimals, its lots of fun because we add, subtract, multiply and divide with decimals. We also did two step problems and mental maths which isn’t as much fun but I still like it a lot!

In Inquiry we have started a new unit called “The World in Balance” our teacher just told us about a new project where we have to get in groups and do a diorama and a report about an endangered animal and the diorama has to look VERY realistic or else its no good!
Thanks P!

Week in Review for 07/01/10 Merry Christmas to all Orthodox Christians!

MATH
This week in Math we were working on decimal fractions. We had to decide what column the decimal number belonged to. For example, 10.563, the 3 is in the thousandths column. We also had a number line and we had to decide which numbers went in between two other numbers.

ENGLISH
This week in English we have been working on persuasive writing. We watched a video of Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech and were focusing on how he made it persuasive. Another day we saw a slide show of some of the tools that help make writing persuasive. Some of them were logos, kairos, research and more!

INQUIRY
In Inquiry we have been learning about biodiversity which means living things that depend and rely on other living things. We watched a video of "Bill Nye the Science Guy" on biodiversity. We also had a special guest come into class who was an Egyptian Tortoise called Mr. George. Then we split into 4 groups and had to find out the history, habitat, future, and lifestyle of the Egyptian Tortoise. After that we split into groups again and told each other what we found out so we could present it to everyone else in the class.

Thanks K!

Welcome back! Happy New Yar!

Welcome back to all the pupils and their families in Year 6L. I hope the New Year finds you well and ready to start the new year with a bang!

Parents are advised that our class schedule on Wednesday (6th January, 2010) will change temporarily to the Thursday schedule. On Monday (25th January, 2010), the schedule will also be the same as on Thursday. This is being done because the specialist teachers need to make up lost lessons due to secondary school closures earlier in the year.

These changes are temporary and only affect this Wednesday, 6th January and Monday, 25th January.

Regards,
Mr. L
