Week in Review for 06/05/10.
In English we have been working on narrative writing. We had to choose a person from WWII and write a piece of narrative writing as if you were that person. I chose Charles De Gaulle and I learned a lot about him like how he felt about the war and how he had to escape to London. This was important because it had a lot to do with what I was writing about. I also learned that when he was broadcasting on the BBC radio in London, he had to use coded messages in case the NAZI’S were listening.
In Math’s we have been working on division. We had to divide decimals and 2 digit numbers. I learned different methods of how to divide whole numbers and I learned a method that was new to me. I also think I got better at division because I used to only divide a 1 digit number by any other number but now I can divide bigger numbers! I have never divided decimals before but then I got better at it once I had practice.
In Inquiry we have started a new topic called conflict and we have mainly been learning about WW2 as an example of conflict. We watched a video called “Goodnight Mr. Tom” about how refugees had to leave London because of the war going on. During the video, I learned how children had to leave their parents and go to safer places, away from the war. They had to stay with someone they didn’t even know with only around 2 suitcases with them.
Thanks K!

Week in Review for 30/04/10
We, have started Journalistic Writing in English, Conflict in Inquiry and Maths is getting VERY busy!
ENGLISH
In English, we have started working on journalist writing, this week we have done our practice draft but next week we are going to start the real piece of journalist writing. We are all very excited and have already started to think about what we are going to write THIS time. Some people are going to do the same topic as the practice draft, others want to change topic. We have one main topic and then from four to six small topics which is quite a lot of work!
MATHS
In maths we have finished textbook 6B and started textbook 6C. The work on textbook 6C that we have been doing this week has been revising what we did in term 2 and working on adding and subtracting numbers with decimals. We also did a game called “Decimal Battleship” it was a really interesting and fun game to play, we enjoyed it a lot!!!
INQUIRY
In Inquiry we have started a new topic called "Conflict." This topic tells us about the reasons countries go to war (Religion, Enconomic reasons, Natural resources and territory) and how different types of wars happened and why they happened, how these wars could have not happened and so on. Most of the class is really interested on working about the topic World War Two and we are doing lots of different tasks that we enjoy doing. For example, a few days ago we got into partners and chose one of the leaders of a country e.g. Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt, De Gaulle, Hitler, Mussolini, etc. Then we researched about them and wrote as many notes we could about them. At the end of the lesson our teacher asked us a question about the person we researched, every time you missed a question the next one got harder!!! Unlucky last person!
In this topic we are having the best trip of the term, the trip that all year 6 classes are waiting for... . It is a place where a very important part of World War Two happened, it shows us how many people died, who those people were and why they had died. This trip is soon and everyone is willing for those weeks to pass quickly because they really want to go. They’ve given us all the information we needed and this has made everyone more nervous and excited at the same time!
As you can see, Term 3 is started as quite a busy term but some of us don't like that much! :)

Week in Review for 01/04/10
Inquiry
In inquiry we have been working on our summative task . Our summative
task is building our own Forces chain reaction. We had to first design then
create it . Here is an example of a Chain reaction: push a ball, it rolls on
down a slide, then falls through the whole through a tube then pushes over the dominoes and the
dominoes which then push the car in the parking. It has to include as many forces as you
can think of. Some people decided to do posters of a chain reaction instead.
Reading records
This week we had to continue our reading records. We do this to show how well
we read and what we understood from the text. Also, the next time we do our reading
record we can see how much we have improved. Here is what we do: first,
you read the story out loud then you read it to yourself . Afterward Mr.Lowe will ask questions
about what you've read but you can look in the text for the answer. Some questions are inferential
questions which are questions where the answer is found by looking at the clues in the text.
Math
In math, we have been doing Percentage, fractions and decimals.
The one that I have enjoyed the most but didn't, really understand it in the
begginig was you had to find the percentage given with the amount of money
given . Then with the answer subtract with the amount of money given.
Here is an example :
20% of 3.00 pounds = 60p. Then I need to do this--> 3.00 pounds - 60p = 2.40 pounds.
Thanks S!

Week in Review for 11/03/10
Math
This week in Maths we have been learning about mode, mean, median and range. Mode is the most often occurring number in the set of numbers you have. Mean is when you have to add all the numbers together and then divide it by the number of numbers given. Median is when you put all the numbers in order and find the one in the middle, but if they are an even set of numbers then you also have to put them in order but this time take the two numbers in the middle and add them together and then divide it by two because they are only two numbers, and that should give you the answer. Range is when you get the biggest and smallest number in your set of numbers and subtract the smallest from the largest and that would give you the range.
English
This week in English we had to pick a topic to do, after we had done that we had to do a KWL chart where we write all that we know and all that we want to know, next we had to research and find all the information that we needed, after we had finished our research we had to write our first draft which had to be 3 pages and size 12 and the font had to be Times New Roman and finally the title and the sub-heading could be size 18, but overall I liked it!
Inquiry
In Inquiry this week we have been creating catapult's which was a method of execution in the old days. We had to go in pairs. We got 3 objects which were: 10 pieces of Lego, a spoon and a cotton ball. Out of these three things we had to create our own catapult. We built the catapult with Lego then we put the spoon between the Lego and last we put the cotton ball on the spoon and we then had to drag the spoon downwards, towards the table to get a lot of power, next we had to release the spoon which would make the cotton ball fly in the air, like they did in the old days except they would put person instead of the cotton ball.
It was a fun week!
Thanks B!

A Mathematics poem!
Math poem
Math is great,
For thinking and no debate,
To open my mind and think,
I have to answer without a blink,
Math is great,
It takes my time until eight,
Not like writing, finishing my ink,
It takes my mind, like swimming till you sink,
Math is great,
To do it with your best mate,
To finish it quickly,
But take care, the teacher marks it strictly,
Math is great,
To help you with your career state,
Its an interesting subject to study,
As it turns out to be a hobby.
Thanks B!

Catapult challenge winners
This week in Inquiry the class has started investigating forces and Newton’s Laws of Motion.
We had a contest to see which group could build a working catapult with a given set of materials in a very limited amount of time from design to testing to working model. Everyone had lots of fun and stray cotton balls were frequently seen flying through the air – having deviated from their intended course!
Great fun! Here are the winners:
First place: S & A with a distance of 3m
Second place: G, K, & P with a distance of 2m 65cm
Third place: S, D & M with a distance of 2m
We’ll be taking what we’ve learned into the coming week as we continue our investigations.
Take Care!

Week in Review for 03/0310
What we have been taking in Maths this week:
This week, we have been looking at Mode, Mean, Median and Range which are different kinds of average.
Mode is the most often number, if you look at the mode you will find that M and O stands for most and often.
Mean is really mean, because you have to add up all the numbers and then divide it by the number of numbers. For example you have 1, 2, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 10, 11; you add them up then divide them by 9 because there are 9 numbers. This is how average is usually worked out.
Median is the middle number, if you have an odd number of numbers it is only the middle after they are put in order. For example 1, 2, 3,3, 6, the three here is the median because there are five numbers. Median is not just the middle, if you have an even number, the two middle numbers added up to make the total, then it is divided by two then you get your answer.
On the other hand Range is simple because if you have 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 10, the range will be 9. As 10 is the biggest number and 1 is the smallest number thus 10-1 equals 9.
We have been also using Mathletics. In Mathletics you get to play games like Tutpup. If you get high score you earn credits, credits are like money where you can buy stuff. You ca. also earn weekly points if you are the winner of the week. Congratulations to Isaac H from America, he is the winner of this week.
I think we should continue using Mathletics and any other websites to do with Maths. This makes us more challenged and gives us an urge to learn Maths and be better.
Thanks A!

Week in Review for 11/02/10
2 weeks ago we went on a trip to a nearby environmental science centre. We all had groups and we did different things to the other groups. My group did acting fishing we also made food webs and we drew pictures about consumers and producers. We had luch there in very open rooms with funny doors and also there wasnt any windows there was just fly screen.
I had a great time there and i hope to go back there again.
MATHS:
Next week we have our Maths Week I hope it will be fun! This week my friends and i made a maths game it is 3-D snakes and ladders/monoply it is really fun.
Inquiry and english: this week we had our celebration of learning and we all got to show our parents our diaramas and our information , we also did our persuasive speeches for judging by Miss Phelps she is one of the secondary english teachers.
Week in Review 18/02/10
English: We have started using laptops for work learning to use them made me an inquirer i was trying to find new things to use on the computer and how different things worked. In this work I was also thinking outside of the box.
Inquiry: We have just had our celebration of learning we showed our parents all the work we have done in this unit my group made a stop-press movie and a replica of a zoo enclosure for Asian Elephants , when show different parents my work I was caring and reflective by being caring I let people talk about my work without interupting and by be reflective I let people know how much trouble our group went to, to get all of it done on time. One of my goals that I used in this is interacting with others because I worked with other people not just my friends.

Week in Review for 04/02/10
This week in year 6 we had lots of fun, we had our videos in Inquiry, we read out our persuasive writing texts and lots more things that I will explain now!
INQUIRY:
In inquiry we practiced our scripts, did the last few touches to our diaramas and then we made the videos, my group's animal is the Asian Elephant and it is much endangered! Also, the other year 6 class came to see our work because they didn't really know what to do in this project but it's normal because the project is quite difficult. We are also still working on our research papers and presentations.
ENGLISH:
In English we had to listen to a partner read their persuasive writing texts and tell them where to put more expression in what they say because some people didn't put much expression and it made what they were reading quite boring. Then, we rehearsed with our group. After that the teacher gave us a post-it note with a letter on it and he would call out a person and say "this person is letter A, B, C…" and the person with the post-it note and that letter had to mark the person reading their persuasive writing text and at the end when everyone had read their persuasive writing text we could go to break.
MATHS:
In maths we have been working on parallel sides and shapes with lines of symmetry which was quite fun because we got to use the mirrors and colour in the shapes! We also worked on reflecting shapes in the four quadrants and naming more difficult 2D shapes. We also got to do our maths games which was also lots of fun because the different groups had different ideas and they were all really cool!
Thanks P!
